Description: One of the key elements of play therapy is a qualitatively different adult-child relationship, in which the child is accepted as she/he is in the space of those therapeutic interactions. This acceptance allows the child a sense of safety. Because safety is so essential to emotional health, it is important to foster these adult-child relationships. Further, being sensitive to diversity issues and meeting the needs of the client as they related to ethnicity, race, gender, age, developmental stage, specific issues is key. This workshop will focus on understanding the impact of play therapy on attachment and responding to the diverse needs of each client.

Learning Objectives Include:

· Examine attachment styles and the impact attachment has on the play therapy relationship.

· Understand methods to facilitate attachment outside of the therapeutic environment utilizing filial play therapy and kindertherapy.

· Analyze issues of diversity and how they impact on every facet of play therapy, from choice of materials to the relationship with the client.

· Increase awareness of cultural differences with regard to play.

· Discuss impact of physical, psychosocial, and cognitive development on play and play themes.

· Become aware of best practices for special populations (i.e., children on spectrum, children of divorce, etc…).

· Increase understanding of utilizing play therapy with adolescent clients.

· Gain awareness of methods of incorporating play therapy in work with adults, in individual, group, and couples counseling.
