Introduction to Play Therapy Basics- Part 1

Description: This is the first of six trainings that participants can attend to gain skills related to Play Therapy, as well as work toward acquiring the required hours to become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). Each of these trainings is a stand- alone training and can be attended as desired by participants. This training will introduce participants to basics of Play Therapy. An exploration of the key tenets, theorists, various approaches to Play Therapy, theoretical models, how to set up a play room, the use of toys, and various Play Therapy skills.


Learning Objectives Include:

 Gain an understanding of the definition of play therapy

 Gain an understanding of the key tenets of play therapy

 Gain an awareness of theorists and organizations that shaped the history of the profession of play therapy.

 Examine distinctions between directive and non-directive approaches to play therapy.

 Develop an understanding of the most widely accepted theoretical models of play therapy.

 Gain an understanding of how to structure and set up a play room.

 Identify developmentally appropriate play therapy toys and materials that can be incorporated into either a play room or traveling play room for the purposes of both assessment and treatment.

 Become familiar with basic play therapy skills including but not limited to structuring, tracking, reflection of content and process, returning responsibility, facilitating self-advocacy, and limit setting.

Cornerstone Counseling Center, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6834. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Cornerstone Counseling Center, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Refund and Cancellation Policy:

Refunds are granted, less a $25 administrative fee, for those requests received in writing by email within two weeks of the seminar. Email requests to No refunds will be given if received less than two weeks from the seminar. If a person fails to attend the seminar and fails to contact us prior to the seminar about a cancellation, no refunds will be issued nor applied to a future seminar. If Cornerstone Counseling Center, LLC cancels any seminars, a full refund will be given. Cornerstone Counseling Center, LLC reserves the right to cancel any seminars due to low enrollment, weather, or other unforeseen circumstances. By enrolling in a seminar, you agree to and will adhere to this policy.


Replacement Certificate Policy:

It is the policy and procedure of Cornerstone Counseling Center, LLC to provide our customers with a certificate of attendance at the end of each seminar. In the event that someone needs a replacement certificate, email our office at and request a new certificate. Please provide your name, course title and date. Please be advised that there will be a fee of $20 for a replacement certificate.
























Dr. Robyn Trippany Simmons, Ed.D., LPC-S, RPT-S: Robyn Trippany Simmons received her Ed.D. in Counselor Education in May 2001 from the University of Alabama. She serves as a professor at Liberty University in Counselor Education. Dr. Trippany Simmonsís research and clinical interests include sexual trauma, vicarious trauma, play therapy, and professional identity issues. She has presented locally, regionally, and nationally and has several publications related to these topics. Further, she is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Alabama and is a Registered Play Therapist.
