Description: It has been noted that one of the most challenging aspects in counseling children is working with the parents or guardians. In play therapy, the play therapist must establish a collaborative and working relationship with their child client’s parental figures in order for the play therapy process to be established, facilitated, and progress. If a parent feels uninvolved, criticized, or disregarded, the play therapy process can be hindered, or at worst, services terminated. Involving parents in the process of play therapy has many therapeutic benefits for both the child and parental figures.  Research also indicated there is a greater effect when parents are involved in the play therapy process. As such, this is an extremely important topic in counseling children and play therapists need to be informed and knowledgeable on the meticulous process of parent consultations in play therapy. When play therapists have a full understanding of the characteristics needed to build a therapeutic alliance with parents, can achieve the main goal of the initial parent contact and consultation, are able to explore the child’s play behaviors and themes in ongoing parent consultations, are capable in teaching and building parenting skills while respecting the family’s culture, both child and parental figures experience optimal care.
